Today the Australian Fair Pay Commission handed down its wage-setting decision.
The wage increases in this decision will apply from the first pay period on or after 1 October 2008.
The effect of the increases set out in the decision are:
  • an increase of $21.66 per week ($0.57 per hour) to the standard Federal Minimum Wage
    (FMW).  This brings the weekly rate for the standard FMW to $543.78 per week.  The hourly rate for the standard FMW will increase from $13.74 to $14.31; and

  • an increase of $21.66 per week ($0.57 per hour) for adult rates of pay in the Australian Pay and Classification Scales (Pay Scales).  A Pay Scale is a rate of pay derived from a federal or state award.

These wage increases will apply to employees in the federal system who receive minimum wage rates, including employees who receive:

  • the standard FMW;

  • a special FMW (a FMW that applies to junior employees or employees with a disability); or

  • a rate of pay included in a Pay Scale.

Most employees and employers in Australia are in the federal system and are covered by the standard FMW, special FMWs or Pay Scales. Employees and employers covered include:

  • trading, financial and foreign corporations and their employees; and

  • most employees and employers in the state of Victoria.
